A fireplace that drafts properly sends its combustion byproducts up the flue and out above the roofline. Smoke, fine particulate, carbon monoxide, water vapor, all of it leaves the building. That is the whole job of a chimney, and when homeowners ask us about fireplace indoor air quality they are picturing a chimney failing at it.
The honest version we give people in Aurora and around the Denver metro is this. The difference between a healthy hearth and a dirty one has little to do with the fuel being inherently bad and almost everything to do with draft and the condition of the appliance. The same oak in the same firebox can send a nearly invisible plume over the roof or hand you a hazy, headachy evening.

What a Working Fireplace Does With Combustion Byproducts
Burning anything with carbon in it produces carbon dioxide, water vapor, heat, and, because no fire is perfect, some carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and solid particulate. A chimney is the engine that removes it. Hot gas in the flue is lighter than the cold air pressing down outside, so it rises, pulling room air in over the fire and pushing exhaust out the top.
That engine needs four things: heat in the flue, a clear passage, the right cross section for the opening, and a house willing to supply replacement air. Meet all four and very little reaches your living space. Miss one and the flue becomes just another opening in your wall.
Why Draft Decides What You Breathe
Two identical fireboxes on the same block can behave completely differently, and the fuel is rarely the reason. Whether combustion products leave through the flue or end up in your lungs is a mechanical question about draft, not a question about what you put on the grate. Fine Particulate in Plain Terms
Why the small fraction is the one that matters
The health relevant material is the fine fraction, generally particles under about 2.5 micrometers. Larger grit gets caught in the nose and throat and cleared. Fine particles travel deep into the lungs, and wood smoke sits heavily in that range, which is why people with asthma, older adults, and small children notice a spilling fireplace first.
What normal operation looks like
You should not smell smoke in the room once the fire is established. The flame should be bright and active rather than a lazy smolder, and insert glass should stay clear instead of fogging with brown tar.
Where Indoor Exposure Actually Comes From, Ranked
Across years of service calls the sources fall into a consistent order, most common first:
- Spillage during startup and shutdown. A cold flue has no draft yet, so the first minutes of smoke roll into the room. The same happens in reverse as a fire dies.
- A marginal or partly blocked flue. Creosote glaze, a collapsed tile, a nest, or a soot packed cap screen narrows the passage, so the fire fights for its exhaust path.
- An open damper drawing back down. With nothing burning, a warm house and cold outdoors reverse the flow. Add a bath fan, dryer, and range hood, and the fireplace becomes the easiest path for makeup air.
- Ash handling. Shoveling dry ash, or running a household or shop vacuum over it, aerosolizes the finest material in the firebox straight into your breathing zone.
- The fuel itself. Wet wood, painted or treated scrap, cardboard, and debris all raise smoke. It is last because it is far less often the cause than a draft problem.

What Altitude and Front Range Weather Do to the Equation
Above 5,280 feet there is less air in a cubic foot. A fire needs a certain mass of oxygen, so at altitude it must move more volume to get it. An appliance set up at sea level runs richer here, making more smoke for the same load.
Chinook winds push down on a chimney sitting low relative to a taller roof section and can stall the draft. The 3-2-10 rule exists for this: a chimney should rise three feet above where it passes through the roof and two feet above anything within ten feet. Monsoon rain cools a soaked crown, and freeze thaw and summer hail open crowns, crack tiles, and dent chase covers, which show up as draft problems in October.
Then there is smoke season. During a bad wildfire stretch outdoor particulate is already high and most of us close the house up tight, so any indoor combustion source matters more.
Vent Free Gas Burners Put Everything Into the Room
Unvented gas log sets work on a different premise: the manufacturer intends the products of combustion to enter the room. They must carry an oxygen depletion sensor that shuts the burner off if oxygen drops, and they have input limits tied to room volume.
Even burning perfectly, a vent free appliance puts carbon dioxide, water vapor, and trace combustion products including carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide into your living space. The moisture is the part homeowners underestimate. Gas and propane release close to a pound of water vapor per 10,000 BTU consumed, roughly a pint an hour on a modest setting and close to a quart an hour on a 20,000 BTU burner.
In a tight newer home in Aurora that becomes fogged windows, a musty smell, and eventually mold at cold window frames. In an old Denver brick house it condenses inside the wall. Our winters are dry, so it feels pleasant at first, which is why the problem builds quietly. Six Changes That Improve Fireplace Indoor Air Quality
In rough order of difference made for effort spent:
- Get the fuel right. Burn dry, seasoned wood under 20 percent moisture, and never treated or painted material, plywood, particleboard, driftwood, or trash. Wet wood spends its energy boiling water instead of burning volatiles, and unburned volatiles are smoke. - Start the fire so the flue heats early. A cold flue has no draft yet, which is why the first minutes of a burn produce most of the smoke that reaches the room. Building top down, with large splits on the bottom and kindling on top, and warming the damper throat before you light both shorten that window.
- Keep the flue swept and inspected. Soot and creosote narrow the passage and change how the chimney breathes. Annual service is the baseline, and it is the core of our chimney sweeping and cleaning service.
- Seal and maintain the damper. A throat damper that no longer closes tight leaves the flue open to reverse flow all summer. A gasketed top mounted damper closes at the crown instead.
- Upgrade to a sealed appliance. An insert with a gasketed door and controlled air removes the open connection between fire and room. It is the biggest single improvement available.
- Run filtration during and after burns. A portable HEPA unit and a pleated furnace filter clear residual particulate faster. Filtration is cleanup, not a fix for a spilling fireplace.
How a Sealed Insert or EPA Certified Appliance Changes the Picture
An open masonry fireplace is by design a hole between your room and the sky. Every upgrade tightens the boundary between combustion and living space.
A direct vent gas insert is sealed. The glass front is fixed and gasketed, combustion air arrives from outdoors through the outer pipe of a coaxial vent, and exhaust leaves through the inner pipe. An EPA certified wood insert gets there differently. Secondary combustion or a catalyst burns the smoke before it leaves the appliance, and the sealed door controls the burn rate. The 2020 step of the EPA New Source Performance Standard limits certified residential wood heaters to 2.0 grams of particulate per hour on the crib wood test method, a fraction of what an open fireplace produces. Ash Handling Without Filling the Room
Fireplace ash is very fine mineral dust with soot in it, and it goes airborne with no encouragement. A standard shop vacuum will not hold it: the fine fraction passes through the filter and blows out the exhaust port at speed.
- Wait until the ash is completely cold. Embers hold heat under a bed of ash far longer than people expect, so give it several days.
- Mist the surface with a spray bottle first. Damp ash stays put.
- Use an ash vacuum with a metal canister and fine filtration, or a scoop and metal bucket.
- Store ash in a lidded metal can on a noncombustible surface away from the house.
When an Air Quality Complaint Is a Venting Fault
Most fireplace air quality complaints are nuisance issues, but a few are not, and telling them apart is worth doing carefully. If a CO alarm sounds even once, or if headaches ease when you leave the house and come back when you return, get everyone outside and call 911 before you relight anything. When a house smells like smoke or someone is reacting to the fireplace, we work in a set order rather than guessing.
- We ask when it happens: at startup or all evening, only when the dryer runs, only on windy days, only in one room. The pattern usually names the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to use a fireplace if someone in the house has asthma?
Often yes, with the right appliance and a chimney in good condition. A sealed direct vent gas insert or an EPA certified wood insert keeps combustion separated from room air, which is very different from an open fireplace that puffs at every startup. What we would not recommend is a firebox that spills, or a vent free burner, in a household with a sensitive occupant.
Does smelling wood smoke indoors mean the air is unhealthy?
It means combustion products are entering the room instead of going up the flue, and the fine particulate in wood smoke is the health relevant fraction. A faint whiff during the first two minutes of a cold start is common and correctable. A smell that persists all evening, or shows up in rooms away from the fireplace, is a venting fault.
Will an air purifier fix a smoky fireplace?
No. A HEPA unit lowers residual particulate after a burn and is worth running, but it treats the symptom. If the fireplace is spilling, the source is producing faster than any room filter can clear. Fix the draft first, then let filtration handle the remainder.
Are vent free gas logs allowed in Colorado?
It depends on the jurisdiction. Some places prohibit unvented gas heaters in dwellings, and Front Range building departments differ, with common restrictions on bedrooms and bathrooms and on input rating relative to room size. Check locally before buying, and confirm any unit has a working oxygen depletion sensor.
Do gas logs affect indoor air quality the way wood does?
Vented gas logs produce far less particulate than wood, but they only stay clean if the damper is fully open every time they run, since all of their exhaust goes up the flue. Vent free burners are the opposite case, because everything they produce, including a substantial amount of water vapor, stays in the room.
How often does the chimney need sweeping to keep indoor air clean?
An annual inspection is the baseline for any fireplace in regular use, with sweeping whenever deposits warrant it. Households that burn several times a week, or that burn wood that was not fully seasoned, usually need service more often. Frequency follows how much you burn and how dry the fuel is.
Why does the house smell like ash in summer when nothing is burning?
That is reverse draft. Warm humid air settles into a cool flue, picks up the smell of creosote and soot, and the house pulls it inward whenever exhaust fans or the air conditioner shift the pressure balance. A top sealing damper, a fitted cap, and a clean flue solve almost all of these.
Can I clean out the ashes with a shop vacuum?
Please do not. Fine ash passes straight through a standard shop vacuum filter and gets blown back into the room at speed, which puts more particulate in your air than leaving it alone would. Use an ash vacuum with a metal canister and fine filtration, or scoop the dampened ash into a lidded metal can.
