If you want fire in a Colorado backyard you have four real choices: a built masonry outdoor fireplace with a chimney, a prefab or kit outdoor fireplace, a gas fire pit, or a wood fire pit. They differ in cost, in what the county lets you burn, in how they handle Front Range wind, and in maintenance.

Short version: a wood fire pit is cheapest and the first thing shut down when restrictions arrive. A gas fire pit is the one you can usually still light during a Stage 1 ban. A built masonry fireplace costs the most, blocks wind best, and is the only one of the four that is genuinely a chimney.

That last point surprises people. An outdoor fireplace needs a sized flue, a crown, and a cap, and because nothing shelters it, freeze thaw damage arrives faster than on the chimney over your living room.

Four Ways To Put Fire In A Colorado Backyard

Every outdoor fire feature we get called to look at is one of these four. Know which one you are shopping for before you talk to a mason. They carry different permit paths, different failure modes, and different answers when restrictions tighten.

A Built Outdoor Fireplace Is A Real Chimney, Not A Yard Ornament

When a mason builds you an outdoor fireplace with a stone chimney above it, you did not buy patio furniture. You bought a second chimney, and it obeys the same rules: a flue sized to the firebox opening, a smoke chamber that narrows properly, a crown, and a cap. It can crack, build creosote, spall, leak, and smoke back at you. The difference is exposure. Nothing shelters it, and it sits cold between fires.

The flue has to match the opening

The rule of thumb on a lined masonry fireplace is a flue cross section of roughly one tenth of the firebox opening area, though the adopted code and the shape of the liner set the actual minimum. Outdoors, with cold masonry stealing heat out of the smoke, we want the flue on the generous side of that range and the chimney taller than it looks like it needs. Draft is a column of warm gas trying to rise, and at 5,280 feet, where the air is thin, a short column with cold walls pulls almost nothing.

The crown and the cap earn their keep outdoors

Which part is the crown and which is the cap, and why a chimney needs both of them, is the subject of our guide to the difference between a chimney cap and a chimney crown. Outdoors both matter more, because no roof or attic slows the water before it lands. A flat mortar smear instead of a sloped, overhanging crown is where failure starts, so crown repair and a correctly fitted cap are the cheapest ways to add years to an outdoor unit.

Why Freeze Thaw Punishes An Outdoor Firebox

Freeze thaw is simple and merciless. Masonry drinks water, water expands roughly nine percent when it freezes, and a few hundred cycles pop the brick face off and turn mortar to sand.

The Front Range is close to a worst case. A sunny February day pushes a south facing wall above freezing by noon and back below by dark. One full cycle. Add monsoon rain, spring hail, and snow sitting in an open firebox.

Sealer helps, but only the right kind

A vapor permeable, breathable masonry water repellent belongs on an outdoor fireplace, reapplied more often than on a sheltered one, and never a film forming sealer or paint. Sealing is also no substitute for fixing a broken crown or failed joints, so trace the water back to its entry point first. Wind, Draft, And Thin Air

Denver sits high enough that combustion behaves differently than at sea level. Less oxygen per cubic foot means a fire needs more air volume to burn wood cleanly, and a lazy fire makes more smoke and creosote. Outdoors you have all the air you want. What you lose is a building shaping airflow around the flue.

Front Range wind does two things. Straight gusts push at the opening and shove smoke back at whoever is closest. Worse, wind rolling over a roof, fence, or slope makes a downward eddy that parks on a short chimney and holds smoke down. That is why a fireplace on the lee side of a two story house smokes when the same unit in the open drafts fine.

Fixes, in the order we try them: build the chimney taller, fit a cap designed to resist downdraft, then a wind directional cap if the spot is bad. The indoor version of this problem, where a fireplace inside the house pushes smoke into the room, is a different diagnosis, and we work through it in why a fireplace will not draft.

Fire Restrictions, Stage 1, And Stage 2

Colorado counties and municipalities issue fire restrictions in stages, and in a dry summer they move fast. The language belongs to whoever signed the order and it changes. What follows is the general pattern, not a legal summary, and no substitute for the current order in your county on the day you burn.

Gas keeps getting a pass while wood does not, and it is not favoritism. A gas appliance with a valve goes out in one second, throws no embers, and leaves no coals glowing after everyone goes inside. Embers, Defensible Space, And The Wildland Urban Interface

Where the metro runs out and the foothills start you are in the wildland urban interface, and an outdoor fireplace is both a risk source and a risk target. Embers travel. A fire miles away can drop burning material into a yard that never saw flame, and the same things catch: needles in a corner, bark mulch against a wall, a woodpile under an eave, an open flue.

A screened cap works in both directions. It keeps sparks from your own fire off the roof and off the neighbor's dry grass, and it keeps wind carried embers out of the flue. Spark arrestor screening is typically in the 3/8 to 1/2 inch range, fine enough to stop a spark, coarse enough not to clog.

Before lighting an outdoor fire on a windy day, we run through this:

  1. Check the current restriction order for your county, not last week's.
  2. Look at wind speed and direction, and at what sits downwind.
  3. Clear needles, leaves, and mulch from the first five feet around the unit. Noncombustible ground cover in that band is the best habit out here.
  4. Confirm the screen is intact, not torn by hail or packed with soot.
  5. Put a charged hose or a full extinguisher within reach before the first match.
  6. Stay with the fire until it is out cold, then drown the ashes.

Clearances From Structures, Fences, And Trees

Clearance rules come from your local adopted code and, for a manufactured unit, from the listing in the box. Here is what gets people in trouble in metro yards.

  • Overhead is what everybody forgets. A cottonwood or ash limb over a fire pit is fuel sitting in a column of hot gas.
  • Wood fences. On a standard lot the fence is close, dry, and cedar. It often decides where the unit goes, not the house.
  • Covered patios and pergolas. Many manufactured pits are not listed for use under any overhead cover, and a pergola over open flame is a bad idea.
  • Decks. Composite and wood both fail under a fire pit without a listed barrier. Radiant heat and hot ash do it, not sparks.

Where a built fireplace touches the house, the usual height logic applies. The flue has to terminate at least three feet above the roof penetration and two feet above anything within ten feet. That is the 3-2-10 rule, and ignoring it outdoors causes the same downdraft.

Gas Lines, Permits, And What Not To Do Yourself

Running a new gas line out to a fire pit is not a weekend job. It is permitted, inspected, pressure tested work for a licensed plumber. The line has to be sized for the burner load plus everything else on the meter, buried deep enough, and fitted with an accessible outdoor shutoff.

Two things go wrong on the units we get called to. An undersized line, where the pit lights but never reaches full flame or drops when the furnace kicks on. And water: an unprotected burner assembly collects rain, that water freezes in the burner tube, and come spring the pit will not light or the flame jumps.

What To Burn In An Outdoor Firebox

An outdoor firebox builds creosote faster than an indoor one, because cold masonry keeps flue temperatures low and low flue temperatures are what condense creosote out of smoke. That makes fuel quality matter more out here rather than less, and the short version is dry seasoned wood only, never anything painted, treated, or glued. Winterizing, And Waking It Up In Spring

Nearly all the outdoor unit damage we see arrives between November and April, and nearly all of it traces to water left somewhere it could freeze.

Shutting it down for winter

  1. Burn down and remove all ash. Ash pulls moisture from the air and is strongly alkaline, so over a wet winter it holds water against masonry and chews on mortar and grates.
  2. Sweep the flue if you burned wood, or book the sweep before you close it up.
  3. Close the damper if there is one, and confirm the cap and screen survived hail season.
  4. On a gas unit, shut the gas off at the outdoor valve, cover the burner, and store the ignition module.
  5. Clear any low point that holds water and open the burner pan drain. Store propane cylinders outdoors and upright, never in a garage or shed.
  6. Use a breathable, vented cover. A sealed tarp traps condensation and does more harm than no cover.

First fire of the season

  1. Walk the unit in daylight looking for crown cracks, spalled brick, and soft mortar.
  2. Look up the flue with a flashlight for a nest, a fallen tile piece, and daylight where there should be none. Check the cap screen for hail damage and soot.
  3. On a gas unit, confirm every burner port is open and check the connection for a leak.
  4. Burn a small test fire on a calm evening. Smoke hanging at the opening on a still night is a draft problem, not a bad log.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an outdoor fireplace really need a chimney cap?

Yes. Rain and snow go straight down an uncapped flue into masonry with no warm room behind it to dry out. The cap also carries the spark screen, which keeps embers off the roof and out of the flue. Uncapped units fall apart fast.

Can I use a gas fire pit during a Colorado fire ban?

Often yes, but never assume. Many Stage 1 orders allow gas devices that shut off instantly, because they throw no embers and leave no coals. Stage 2 orders vary and some include gas. The order in your county that day governs, so read it.

How far should an outdoor fireplace be from the house?

That comes from your local adopted code and, for a manufactured unit, from the listing. There is no single number right everywhere. Overhead clearance from limbs, pergolas, and eaves causes more trouble than horizontal distance, and an attached chimney still has to clear the roof line.

Do I need a permit to build an outdoor fireplace?

Usually something in the job is. The footing and masonry structure are typically structural work, and a new gas line is its own permitted, inspected job. Requirements differ across Aurora, Denver, Arapahoe, Jefferson and Douglas, so ask your building department early.

Does an outdoor fireplace need to be swept?

If you burn wood in it, yes. Cold masonry and a short stack keep flue temperatures low, and low flue temperatures build creosote faster than a warm indoor chimney. Sweep on the schedule your burning calls for, and inspect every year.

Should I seal the brick or stone on my outdoor fireplace?
