A pellet stove burns compressed sawdust pellets that an electric auger drops into a small burn pot, while a fan pushes combustion air up through the fire. That one choice separates it from every other solid fuel appliance in a Colorado home. The fire is fed and vented mechanically instead of depending on natural draft, so it can exhaust through a 3 or 4 inch pipe out a side wall rather than needing a full chimney.

For a lot of Front Range homeowners that is the appeal: real solid fuel heat, a hopper that runs overnight, thermostat control, and an appliance generally still permitted on a high pollution advisory day when open fireplaces are shut down. The tradeoffs are honest. It needs electricity, it is fussy about fuel, and it wants a cleaning rhythm a wood stove does not.

How a Pellet Stove Works

A pellet stove is five parts working together, and understanding them is most of what you need to troubleshoot one.

  • Hopper. Holds one to three 40 pound bags, which is where the fill it once a day reputation comes from.
  • Auger. A slow screw metering pellets into the pot at a rate the board sets. Feed rate is heat output; there is no damper to fiddle with.
  • Burn pot. A perforated cup the size of a coffee mug where the fire lives. Its holes are the entire air supply to the flame.
  • Combustion blower. Pulls air through those holes and pushes flue gas out. This makes the stove forced draft, and it is why the vent runs under positive pressure with gasketed, locked joints instead of slip fit pipe.
  • Igniter and convection blower. An element lights the first load; a room fan blows heat off the heat exchanger.

Because a fan controls the air and a motor controls the fuel, the stove holds a set output rather than drifting the way a wood fire does. It also means the appliance has a brain.

The safety switches that shut it down

Nearly every pellet stove has a vacuum switch proving the blower is moving air before the auger may feed, plus a high limit disc that kills the auger on overheat. Those two cause most of the calls we take about a stove that keeps shutting off, and they are usually right: a plugged sensing hose, a leaking gasket, or a restricted vent.

Where a Pellet Stove Fits Against Wood and Gas

Most homeowners calling us are weighing a pellet stove against something else. Here is where it lands in the field.

Pellet Fuel Quality: Grades, Ash, and Moisture

Nothing affects how a pellet stove runs more than what goes in the hopper. Cordwood buyers know this from our guide to the best firewood for Colorado. With pellets, the numbers are printed on the bag.

The Pellet Fuels Institute runs a voluntary standards program, and bags from participating mills carry a grade tag limiting ash, fines, moisture, and durability. Those differences look small on paper and are enormous in the burn pot.

Read the tag, not the front of the label. Many manufacturers require premium grade and say so in the warranty language, and a cheap high ash pellet doubles your cleaning.

Hardwood versus softwood pellets

Marketing says hardwood is better because hardwood cordwood is better. That logic does not carry over. Pellets are compressed to similar density regardless of species, so heat comes by the pound, not the log. Much of Colorado's supply is softwood, and it burns just fine.

  • Bark content matters more than species. Bark carries dirt and minerals, and minerals become ash and clinker.
  • Buy a bag before a ton. Stoves have preferences. Test one bag, then commit to the pallet.

Venting a Pellet Stove in a Colorado Home

Pellet vent is not stove pipe and not dryer duct. It is listed double wall pipe, commonly labeled type PL, with gasketed and locked joints because the exhaust side runs under positive pressure. A leak there puts combustion gas in the room. Two layouts cover almost every install we do.

  1. Horizontal through the wall. Stove against an exterior wall, vent back and out through a thimble to a termination cap. Cheapest, and the most common retrofit in newer metro builds.
  2. Vertical, up an existing chimney or through the roof. More work, and the better performing option nearly every time.

Even on a horizontal layout, most manufacturers ask for vertical rise before the pipe turns out. That leg lets hot flue gas leave on natural draft if the power quits mid burn, instead of the stove filling the room with smoke. A vertical run inside a relined masonry chimney drafts best of all, though older 1900s brick flues usually need repair before they can carry one.

Colorado weather then works on the termination. Wind, blowing snow, and hail all reach the cap, and freeze thaw corrodes outdoor runs. In the foothills, ember screening matters too.

Clearances people get wrong

Manufacturers publish minimum distances from the cap to grade, doors, operable windows, eaves, and gas meters. Two get missed here. Grade means the top of the snow, not the dirt, so a terminal a foot off the lawn is buried by February. And the gas meter often sits on the very wall the homeowner wants the stove against.

Altitude and the High Elevation Page in the Manual

At 5,280 feet in Denver, and higher up the canyons, there is less oxygen in every cubic foot the stove pulls. A working figure in the heating trades is a few percent less air density per thousand feet, putting the Front Range down roughly a fifth from sea level.

A pellet stove forces its own air, so it tolerates altitude far better than a natural draft appliance. But it still must move more air to burn the same fuel, which is why manufacturers publish high elevation instructions. Depending on brand, those include some mix of:

  • Stepping the vent from 3 inch to 4 inch above a stated elevation, often in the 2,500 to 3,000 foot range, which means essentially every Front Range install.
  • Raising combustion blower speed or changing a control board trim setting.
  • Reducing maximum feed rate, which derates the stove's rated output.
  • Requiring an outside air kit, which matters most in tight newer builds where a radon fan, range hood, and bath fans already hold the house at negative pressure.

Skip those and the symptoms are consistent: a lazy dark orange flame that rolls instead of standing up bright, soot on the glass within hours, and carbon building fast in the pot.

Air Quality Action Days: Why a Pellet Stove Usually Still Runs

The Front Range gets high pollution advisory days, especially during winter inversions when cold air parks under a warm layer and the brown cloud settles over the metro. Residential burning restrictions kick in.

The distinction that matters is between an uncontrolled open fire and a certified appliance. An open masonry fireplace has no emissions control and is restricted first. An EPA certified pellet stove burns a metered amount of dry fuel with forced air, and certified appliances are generally treated differently under the advisory rules.

The Maintenance Rhythm a Pellet Stove Demands

This is what surprises wood stove owners. A pellet stove burns cleaner but needs more hands on it. Fine fly ash coats everything inside, and a film on the heat exchanger measurably cuts the heat reaching the room.

  1. Every one to three days while burning. Scrape the burn pot open. Any hard glassy lump, called a clinker, comes out now rather than later.
  2. Weekly. Empty the ash pan and run the heat exchanger scraper rod. Vacuum the firebox with an ash vacuum, never a shop vacuum with a paper filter, since fine ash blows straight through it.
  3. Weekly. Wipe the glass with a damp cloth and a pinch of cold ash, a free mild abrasive. Check the door gasket still grips a dollar bill.
  4. Monthly. Vacuum the hopper to bare metal before refilling so fines do not reach the auger, and clear ash traps behind the baffles.
  5. Monthly. Check the termination from outside: screen clear, no bird nesting, no hail damage to the cap.
  6. Once a year, before the season. Clean the vent run and blower impeller, clear the vacuum switch hose, replace worn gaskets, check the igniter, verify the auger.

Pellet stoves do not make heavy tar creosote the way a smoldering wood fire does, so the concerns in our guide to preventing creosote buildup apply differently. What they make is fine ash that packs into elbows and horizontal runs. Power Outages: The One Real Weakness

Say it plainly. No electricity, no pellet stove. The auger stops and both blowers stop. If the outage lands mid burn, fuel already in the pot keeps burning with no forced exhaust behind it, and unless the vent has vertical rise, some of that smoke comes inside.

  1. Size the load first. The biggest draw is ignition, since the igniter is a resistance element. Running draw afterward is a fraction of that. Check the data plate rather than guessing.
  2. Choose pure sine wave backup. Control boards and variable speed motors dislike modified sine wave output. A cheap square wave inverter is the wrong tool.
  3. Start the stove before the storm. Igniting on battery burns a large share of your reserve. A stove already cruising on low draws far less.
  4. Wire a generator inlet if outages are common where you live. In the foothills that often beats batteries.

Some manufacturers offer a factory battery backup module, which is far cheaper specified at purchase than retrofitted later.

Storing Pellets in a Colorado Garage

Pellets are sawdust held together by lignin and pressure. Water undoes that. A damp bag becomes swollen sawdust that jams an auger and will not burn worth anything.

  • Keep the pallet off the concrete. A slab wicks ground moisture and sweats when warm humid air meets cold concrete. Leave bags on their pallet or on scrap lumber.
  • Leave the plastic wrap on until you need each bag. It is doing real work.
  • Watch the swamp cooler. Evaporative cooling is common here and pushes moisture through the house all summer.
  • Mind monsoon season and snowmelt. Garage floors flood from an August downpour or a February thaw. Store above the water line.
  • Buy early. Supply gets thin in a cold snap. A ton is fifty 40 pound bags, so measure your space first.

What Drives Your Operating Cost

We will not quote a fuel price, because pellet prices move by season, brand, and lot size. Here is the arithmetic to run your own numbers with a local quote in hand.

Premium pellets are commonly rated near 8,000 BTU per pound, so a 40 pound bag carries roughly 320,000 BTU and a ton about fifty times that. Multiply by your stove's rated efficiency, divide your delivered cost per ton by the result, and you have a cost per million BTU to compare against your gas bill. Beyond fuel price, these move the number:

  • How much house you heat. A pellet stove is a zone heater. Savings live in heating the room you occupy while the furnace idles, and disappear when you try to heat two stories from one stove.
  • Envelope. A 1900s Denver brick bungalow with original windows eats far more fuel than a 2015 build.
  • Fuel grade. A high ash bargain pellet delivers less heat per pound and adds cleaning labor.
  • Cleanliness. A dirty stove is an expensive stove.

The Failure Points We See Most

After enough service calls, patterns emerge. Ranked roughly by how often we find them:

  1. Plugged burn pot holes. Number one by a wide margin. Ash and clinker choke the air holes and the fire starves.
  2. Clogged vacuum switch hose. A line packed with fine ash convinces the stove the blower failed, so it lights, runs briefly, then trips.
  3. Leaking door or ash pan gasket. Rope flattens with heat and time, so the blower pulls room air instead of pot air and the fire goes lazy.
  4. Dirty combustion blower impeller. Ash builds on the blades and the blower loses capacity.
  5. Fines or foreign objects in the auger. Sawdust packs the flights, and occasionally we pull out a bolt or rock that rode along in the bag.
  6. Restricted vent. Fly ash in elbows and horizontal runs, a caked termination screen, or a bird that liked the look of the terminal.
  7. Failed igniter. A consumable. Cold starts quit while the stove is otherwise healthy.
  8. Corroded vent sections. Acidic condensate plus freeze thaw plus years, usually on outdoor horizontal runs.
