Firebrick and refractory mortar are considerably heavier. Then thermal behavior: brick and castable refractory expand at different rates, so brick bedded against a steel shell moves independently and works fasteners loose.
Dimensions matter too. Panel thickness was part of the tested design, because firebox volume, throat opening, and the distance from fire to glass all shaped how the unit drafts. Add an inch of brick per wall and you have changed the air path of a system already fighting thin air above five thousand feet. Listed-System Integrity: How Mixing Parts Voids the Listing
Here is the idea that makes prefab work different from everything else in this trade. Your fireplace is not a fireplace plus a chimney. It is one listed system. The manufacturer sent the firebox, chimney sections, elbows, firestops, cap, and panels to a testing lab as a package, and certification applies to that package installed per the instructions.
The violations we find are almost always well intentioned. A roofer swaps a rusted cap for a generic one. A previous owner splices in a different brand of pipe to gain height. Someone packs insulation into the chase against the pipe, killing the air space it needs to stay cool. Each cancels the listing on its own.
