A spark arrestor is the metal mesh screen wrapped around the opening of a chimney cap. That is the whole thing. On a Colorado roof it works both directions at once: it keeps burning bits of your own fire off your shingles and off the dry grass next door, and it keeps wind driven embers from a distant fire out of an open flue.
Nearly every cap sold today ships with a screen, so the question is rarely whether to add one. It is whether the screen you have is the right mesh, still intact after a few hail seasons, and clean enough to let smoke out. A screen packed with creosote flakes chokes your draft long before you notice it stopped protecting anything.
Here is how we look at arrestors on calls from Aurora out to the foothills.
What A Spark Arrestor Is, And What It Is Not
A finished chimney cap is three parts doing three jobs.
- The lid. Sheds rain and snow away from the flue opening and keeps the liner dry.
- The screen. The mesh cylinder between lid and base. That is the spark arrestor, and it also keeps birds and squirrels out.
- The base band. Clamps to the flue tile or bolts to the crown. It holds the assembly on when a March windstorm arrives.
Because screen and cap ship as one assembly, people use the two words interchangeably. They are not the same. What an arrestor is not: a fire suppression device. It buys margin. It does not make a dirty flue safe, and it will not stop a chimney fire already running. That job belongs to a clean liner, and to keeping creosote from stacking up.
The Two Directions A Spark Arrestor Protects In
Most homeowners think about one direction. The screen earns its keep in both.
Direction one: embers leaving your chimney
A wood fire throws sparks, and it throws more on a reload and when the wood is resinous. Pine and fir pop. Those fragments ride the hot gas column up the flue, and with no screen a share of them clear the top still burning.
Where they land is the issue. The 3-2-10 rule puts the outlet three feet above the roof penetration and two feet above anything within ten, which is what draft wants. It does not stop embers falling back onto shingles, a gutter packed with needles, or the dry grass on the greenbelt out back.
Direction two: embers arriving from somewhere else
In a wind driven fire, embers travel far ahead of the flame front, sometimes well over a mile, arriving as a rain of burning debris rather than a wall of fire. The Marshall Fire showed how far a grass fire pushed by Front Range wind can reach into neighborhoods nobody called a fire zone the week before.
An uncapped flue is a hole in your roof pointed at the sky. If the damper is open, or no longer seals because the frame warped, an ember that drops in lands on the smoke shelf in dry soot. That soot is fuel, and so is glazed creosote on the liner wall.
What Mesh Size Means And Where The Numbers Come From
Screen size means the clear opening between wires, not the wire. The model code language most jurisdictions work from, in the International Residential Code, describes an arrestor whose openings will not pass a sphere larger than 1/2 inch and will not block one smaller than 3/8 inch, with net free area at least four times the flue outlet area, in material at least equivalent to 19 gauge galvanized or 24 gauge stainless steel.
That sets a floor and a ceiling. Bigger than 1/2 inch lets real embers through. Smaller than 3/8 inch is not permitted, and the reason is draft, not cost. Mountain fire districts run stricter, and our overview of Colorado chimney codes and regulations covers how those layers stack.

Gas and pellet appliances follow different rules. A sealed direct vent gas fireplace terminates through its own listed cap and gets no added screen. A pellet vent makes fine ash rather than sparks, so manufacturer hardware governs; our pellet stove guide for Colorado covers that.
Why A Finer Screen Is Not A Safer Screen
This is the mistake we correct most. Somebody reasons that if 1/2 inch stops most embers, quarter inch stops all of them, then staples hardware cloth over the cap.
Net free area collapses first. A flue is a pump driven by nothing but the temperature difference between the gas inside and the air outside, a weak engine on a good day. The four times rule exists because a screen is a restriction. Halve the opening and you have not just halved the flow, you have added surface for deposits to grab.
Then fine mesh turns into a filter. Every fire lofts fly ash and creosote flakes. Coarse mesh passes them; fine mesh mats them into a felt that tightens the openings further. Altitude, Cold Flues, And Why Colorado Screens Load Up Fast
Air along the Front Range is thinner than the air this equipment was tested in, and thinner still in the mountain towns. Less oxygen per unit volume means a cooler fire, so more unburned material goes up the flue and condenses sooner. If a screen loads faster than once a year, wet wood is usually why.
Foothills Versus Flats: How Your Address Changes The Calculation
Chimney work here is not one conversation. A house in a lodgepole stand west of Evergreen and a house on a quarter acre lot in Aurora both need a working arrestor, but the failure modes differ.
In the wildland urban interface the threat is arrival: a fire crowning a ridge two drainages over, wind out of the west, a long ember rain across every roof. Screen integrity matters more than cleanliness there, because a torn screen is an open door. On the flats the threat is departure, your own sparks in dry turf on a red flag day.

Hail, Wind, And The Physical Life Of A Screen
Colorado sits in hail alley, and the cap is the most exposed hardware on the house. The damage runs in a predictable order.
- Lid dents. Cosmetic on heavy stainless. On thin aluminum a hard hit dishes the lid and pulls the mesh out of square.
- Mesh deformation. Hail drives the screen inward. Openings pinch on one side and stretch on the other, so the screen now passes embers it used to catch.
- Weld failure. Impact plus freeze thaw works the spot welds where mesh meets band. Once one lets go, wind peels the screen back.
- Rust. A chipped coating on galvanized steel rusts within a season or two, and rust eats wire from the inside out.

Signs Your Spark Arrestor Is Clogged
Ranked by how often the symptom traces back to the screen rather than something else.
- Smoke rolls out at startup and never clears. Draft was fine last winter, nothing changed, now every fire smokes.
- The fire is lazy and will not build. Flames stay short and orange, and the room smells faintly of smoke for hours.
- It gets worse in wind or when the furnace runs. A partly blocked flue has no reserve, so any competing pressure wins.
- The screen looks fuzzy from the ground. Binoculars show gray felt where daylight should be.
- Dark staining down the outside of the cap and crown. Condensed exhaust that could not get out cleanly, plus summer odor from a screen holding moisture.
How We Inspect And Clean An Arrestor
The arrestor is part of a normal service call, not a separate trip. NFPA 211 calls for annual chimney inspection, and the screen check falls inside that visit.
- Look from the ground. Binoculars tell us whether the cap is present, seated, square and screened before anyone sets a ladder.
- Take the lid off if the design allows. Some caps are bolt on, some come off whole, some masonry caps do not come off.
- Sweep the flue top down first. Sweeping loosens exactly what lands on the screen, so cleaning it first wastes the work. That is part of a standard chimney sweep and cleaning service.
- Brush the screen from both faces. Stiff brush outside, then inside where the felt builds. Deposits come off dry.
- Check mesh geometry. Pinched openings, stretched openings, torn corners, separation at the band. Anything passing a sphere over 1/2 inch is a fail.
- Check the fastening and the crown under it. A good cap on a cracked crown is temporary, and water behind the collar rusts it loose.
- Photograph everything. This is the part of a chimney inspection that matters most later, whether the next conversation is a repair, a claim or a sale.
Rescreen Or Replace: What The Screen Itself Decides
The screen question is narrow: a matted but intact screen on a sound stainless cap is a cleaning, while a torn screen, or one whose openings have opened past 1/2 inch, fails on the spot and needs a rescreen or a new cap. The Chimney Is One Line In A Larger Home Hardening Plan
We are chimney people, so we will keep this short. The screen is one opening on a house with many.
- Screen attic, soffit and crawlspace vents with fine metal mesh. The guidance runs opposite to the chimney, because those vents do not exhaust hot gas. Fine mesh on a vent is right; fine mesh on a flue is dangerous.
- Keep gutters and roof valleys clear of needles and leaves, especially downslope of the chimney.
- Keep the first five feet around the foundation free of combustible mulch, stacked firewood and dense shrubs. Colorado State Forest Service defensible space guidance makes that zone the top priority.
- Watch what lives under decks. A deck is a large horizontal ember trap.

A Practical Order Of Operations Before Fire Season
If you do nothing else, do these, in this order.
- Confirm a screen exists. Walk to the street with binoculars. Open flue tile is the finding, and it is a call worth making today.
- Book the inspection and sweep together. The screen cannot be judged until the flue above it is clean, and mesh damage outranks cosmetic dents.
- Verify the damper seals. Ember protection is layered: screen first, damper second.
- Clear the roof and gutters, then re-check after severe hail or wind. The ember that clears the screen has to land somewhere, and one bad afternoon undoes a good cap.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a spark arrestor required on a chimney in Colorado?
There is no single statewide answer. Requirements come from the building code your jurisdiction adopted plus any local wildland urban interface amendments, and mountain districts are often stricter. The model code most Colorado jurisdictions build from specifies arrestor screening for solid fuel chimneys, so if you burn wood you want one.

Brushing a screen is not complicated. Getting onto a roof, working over an open flue and judging whether the mesh still meets spec is where it goes wrong. On a walkable single story pitch, plenty of homeowners handle it. On a steep or tile roof, hire it out. And mind the sequence: sweeping the flue afterward re-dirties the screen.
